Locating and Repairing Leaks on Your Roof
Any minor roof leak can eventually lead to extensive damage so it is vital that you fix it in the early stages. Small leaks can cause mould, devastate the insulation, rot the framing of the property and damage the interior ceilings. If you notice water stains on your ceilings or running down the walls, it is most likely to be caused by a roof leak. If you can repair the leak now it will save you a lot of time, effort and money in the future. Fixing the leak is the easy part, normally finding the leak in the first place is the more difficult part. If you are going to try and fix the leak yourself, get the correct roofing supplies in Birmingham or your nearest city. Here are some tips for locating and repairing roof leaks.
Finding the Leak
If you have stains on the interior then the first thing to do is check the roof above the stain locations. The most common cause of leaks on a roof will be from penetrations so search for those. If you can get in to your attic then you can look at the roof from the inside to see signs such as stains from water, mould or black marks. The last option is to go on to the roof with a garden hose and spray the areas where you think the leak is. Get a helper on the inside to look for drips or signs or leaking.

Repairing the Leak
Vents and plumbing vents can often get damaged and are the cause for leaks. You may just need to replace a nail or rubber boot, or it may be easier to change the whole vent. Small holes and cracks on the roof can be fixed easily with flashing.
